The Learning Laptop – A Great Toy for Preschoolers!

When you are shopping for a children’s toy in College Station, there aren’t that many places to go. My regular toy-hunt spots are Toys R Us, Target or Jacques Toys and Books. Recently, while shopping for a Birthday present for one of my child’s friends, I came across a section of “laptop computers” for children.

I wasn’t in the market for a toy like this, but I was curious to see what was being offered. These mini-computers currently range in price from around $20.00 to well over $130.00. I played with a few in the isle, and immediatly re-shelved the ones I couldn’t figure out. After all, if I can’t quicky determine which button to push, how can a 2-5 year old? My children were with me and, to keep them quite while I viewed the merchandise, I quickly handed my son a Batman Laptop and my daughter a Barbie Mariposa Laptop. These were both priced at the low end of $19.95. It quickly became apparent to me that the toys were doing an excellet job of holding my children’s attention.

The laptops are basically the same. The only difference is whether Barbie or Batman is talking to you. Each learning laptop features 8 fun and educational games. The activities are designed to teach essential preschool skills. Lessons involve: learning the alphabet, increasing vocabulary, learning numbers & values, counting, simple math, shapes, colors, music appretiation, memory development and hand-eye cordination. The toy has a small LCD screen and desplays entertaining black & gray basic animation.

I purchased the ones my children were playing with and have been nothing but extremely impressed with the toys. My daughter is only old enough to play the shapes game right now, but she clearly enjoys it. The toy has helped my son with learning all the letters of the alphabet and has taught him to recognize the lower-case letters. He is currently working on his counting skills, and to this day, it is still a favorite toy of both my children. I give the learning laptop 5 gold stars.

My how toys have changed even in just the last 10 years…. Jacques Toys has been there for our family for years! Their location on Texas Avenue near Luby’s is fabulous. They have not only fun but educational toys. They even have “old favorites” from when I was a kid. Just remember – PLAY with your kids!
